The Certificate IV in Business provides superior grounding in the key competencies commonly deployed in clerical roles, and in the administrative and business support sector generally. Participants develop the skills required to oversee an office, undertake informed decision-making across a variety of administrative tasks, and liaise on administrative matters with colleagues.


Course Structure

The Certificate IV in Business is delivered by expert trainers in 6 x full day workshops scheduled across 9 months of this 12 month program. This approach allows students sufficient time between and after workshop completion to undertake self-directed learning, assignments, and out-of-class assessment. Workshops engage participants in active discussion, problem-solving exercises, networking opportunities, and presentations related to the efficient conduct of administrative business operations and procedures.

Participants have the option of undertaking this course online, using Upskilled's customised Learning Management System. The online program is conducted over a 12 month period and employs an approach that blends distance and online education in the management and delivery of learning resources.



There are no formal prerequisites for this qualification.


Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

RPL is available for each unit of competency based on relevant workplace experience, formal training, or other expertise. To apply for RPL, please submit documentation in portfolio form for evaluation by Upskilled assessors.



Assessment is through participation in the 6 structured workshops, as well as the carrying out of some projects in the workplace.



Upskilled courses include detailed learning materials, assessments, and certification upon successful completion. Lunch, and other refreshments, are included for classroom courses, while online trainer support is included for online delivery.

The Certificate IV in Business comprises 10 units of competency as identified in the National Business Services Training Package. All units must be successfully completed to attain the certificate.

Upskilled arranges units of competency around a series of learning clusters in order to consolidate and customise the overall learning experience. Participants target skills and knowledge across 6 clusters (5 core, 1 elective) as tabulated below.

Addresses the skills and knowledge required to manage self-performance and professional development. Particular emphasis is given to setting and meeting priorities, analysing information, and using a range of strategies to develop further competence

Relationship management

Addresses the skills and knowledge required to develop and maintain effective work relationships and networks; to establish, maintain and improve client relationships; and to actively participate in networks to support key business outcomes. This module covers relationship building and negotiation skills as commonly required by workers within an organisation.

Workplace safety and risk

Addresses the skills and knowledge required to implement and monitor an organisation's Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) policies, procedures, and programs to meet legislative requirements. Also, the identification of risks and application of established risk management processes as an aspect of work responsibilities.

Customer Service

Addresses skills and knowledge around customer relationship management, aspects of which include assisting customers to articulate needs, meeting customer needs, and managing networks to ensure customer needs are addressed. The evaluation, implementation, and development of customer service strategies is also a key focus of this module.

Improvement and innovation

Written communications

Addresses the skills and knowledge required to design and develop business documents using complex technical features of word processing software. Document planning, drafting, preparation of final text, and the production of complex documents are all components of this module.
