Western Herbal Medicine is one of the oldest forms of medicine and involves the use of medicinal plants for therapautic purposes. Herbal medicine is a holistic form of medicine which not only treats the symptoms but addresses the underlying causes of the condition. The Bachelor of Health Science (Western Herbal Medicine) educates students to identify individual properties of different herbs, how to prepare them and how to prescribe them.

  • Course Description

    The Bachelor of Health Science (Western Herbal Medicine) is ideal for those seeking an education in incorporating herbal medicine practice as part of a holistic and scientifically based health plan to help meet patients needs. 

    The 36 units cover such knowledge and training as: biological and social sciences, western herbal medicine and clinical studies, properties of herbs and herbal pharmacology and the history and philosophy of herbal medicine.

    Students will also complete industry experience through two work placement components, Clinical Studies and Clinical Practicum.

    Course Delivery

    This course is delivered over a duration of 3-6 years. You can choose from full-time or part-time delivery modes, putting you in total control of your completion date. This course is delivered at both the Brisbane and Sydney ACNT campus. For online study, each subject runs for 10 weeks and your study time commitment is approx. 10hrs (per subject) per week. Some subjects are offered online, while others must be taken on-campus, in a specialist facility. 

    Industry Placement

    The course work includes both clinical work and fieldwork placement, ensuring that you graduate with valuable experience and industry contacts. Students undertake around 100 hours of practical work placement over the course of their degree, which means you graduate with not only a qualification but also invaluable professional experience - equipping you to be work ready. 

    Prerequisites

    Applicants should have completed Senior High School Certificate (Year 12) or equivalent or Mature age entry with relevant work experience with an ATAR 60 or equivalent. Demonstrated ability to undertake study at this level:

    • work experience, and/or other formal, informal or non-formal study attempted and/or completed

    Additional course entry requirements:

    • First Aid Certificate, Working with Children and Police Check before commencing clinical subjects
    • Pass in a science subject at senior secondary level recommended
    • Pass in standard English Band 4 or above

    Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

    RPL is available for each unit of competency based on relevant workplace experience, formal training, or other expertise. To apply for RPL, please submit documentation for evaluation by assessors. More information can be found here for course credit and here for RPL.

    The Bachelor of Health Science (Western Herbal Medicine) graduates are well placed to pursue a career as a herbal medicine practitioner. 

    The natural medicine industry has rapidly grown of recent, mainly due to public demand.  There is a growing need for highly trained professionals able to work in a variety of settings such as medical clinics, health food stores, complementary clinics, health retreats and self-employment. In addition, many students go on to set up their own clinics, undertake postgraduate study, work overseas, publish journals and also work voluntarily to give something back to the community. This degree meets industry associaation requirements so you can become a member of the related professional association.
