In 2014 a team of parents, including Rob Gage (the father of Upskilled’s founder and Director, Joel Gage), started a golf day fundraiser for their regional Special Olympics group. Approaching small businesses for prizes through door-knocking, generous donations of meat trays served as a welcome major prize.

One year later, Upskilled became involved in the event, expanding the occasion through hole sponsors, bigger prizes, and a greater number of players.

Since then, our company has been hosting this same golf day each year, which has now evolved into a major fundraiser for the Special Olympics in the Sydney South region. In its fourth year, this event raises between $11,000 to $14,000 a year, backed up by 100 to 130 supporters; with the proceeds directly given to the region’s Special Olympics athletes as a means for covering all their necessary expenses.

A day of fun for all

Set on the bright green landscape of the Cronulla Golf Club, we are expecting a day set to bring tons of competitive golf, socialising, and a sausage sizzle lunch. Participants will also get to enjoy other activities such as raffles, auctions, and lucky draws – with memorable happenings to be captured throughout the day by a photographer on the course.

Of course, while this event provides exciting competitive sport and food and drinks to boot; our main focus is not the players or the game itself, but rather supporting the needs of the Sydney South region’s Special Olympics athletes.

Supporting our community

As previously mentioned, the funds raised during this event will go directly into the training and equipment costs of these passionate individuals, covering essentials such as sports programs, membership fees, qualified coaches, uniforms, and sporting equipment – some of which are usually shouldered by the athletes’ families themselves. It’ll be a day where participants get to provide Special Olympics athletes with the opportunity to pursue the sports they love.

The motto for the event is “Supporting athletes with an intellectual ability achieve their best through sport.” Few things are more fulfilling than being able to help others let their ambitions shine. Don’t miss out this November 26; you’ll be making a difference in the lives of so many athletes.
