The biggest HR trends to watch out for in 2018 are all to do with technology, education and innovation. HR departments are striving to foster workplace cultures that are fair, informed and fun spaces in 2018. HR professionals need to be tech-savvy as well as employee focused to keep up with the changing HR landscape, and there are a variety of new tools available to assist these goals.
In an effort to reduce the influence of personal bias during the recruitment process, many human resource departments are reviewing the systems they have in place to assess resumes and individuals. Pre-employment tests, the structure and location of interviews and ‘blinding’ the resume are three new innovations in the HR process, all introduced in an effort to create a fairer system for applicants to be evaluated on their competency, not their race, age, gender or sexuality.
Before setting eyes on an applicant some employers have created aptitude tests and written interviews that are completed online prior to a face-to-face interview. This provides an objective assessment of their skills and knowledge, so that their employer has a fair idea of their suitability for the position before they even meet.
Another way to meet an applicant and get a sense of their personality and skillset without having the interviewer’s judgement clouded by outward appearance.
‘Blinding’ the resume
Reading a resume ‘blind’ involves having a third party or one member of the team removing all personal information from the header of an applicants’ resume or CV.
There are now more ways than ever to incorporate online technology into the daily routines of an HR department, with some cloud applications making communication and interactions with employees easier.
HR management software
Gone are the days of sweating over a spreadsheet trying to figure out the week’s roster. More frequently HR departments are turning to companies like Deputy, who have developed intuitive, easy-to-use apps for scheduling, timesheets and communication with employees. By using an electronic rostering system, management are empowering their employees to manage their own time and attendance as well as requests for leave.
The capacity to organise a video interview has been an option in HR for many years. However, a new system being trialled in some areas of the Australian public service comprises of a computer automated interview where applicants have no contact with a human interviewer at any time. Completed online, applicants log in to a program. They have a set amount of time to record their answer to each question, and these videos are reviewed by a hiring panel at a later date. Applicants who successfully advance to the next stage of selection may be interviewed in person.
Education - Upskilling employees
In the modern workforce employees are supported and even encouraged to undertake further education. Forward-thinking HR divisions are investing more time and money in upskilling their employees. This stands to benefit both parties. Employees who are receiving more education and training find satisfaction within their personal and professional growth, are capable of performing at a higher standard within the company. More and more frequently it is becoming an expectation that employees should have greater flexibility in the way they complete their jobs.

Standing desks, treadmill meetings
A day in the office no longer mandates sitting at a desk. In order to ensure the physical comfort of all employees, many companies will provide a standing desk upon request. A more radical example would be a treadmill meeting room, where the morning brief or a less formal meeting takes place with those in attendance walking briskly in a circle of treadmills.
