4 new careers in digital marketing you can study from home

By Rosa Ritchie | 19 June 2018

Are you looking for a career in Digital Marketing or Social Media? As the landscape of digital communications evolves so rapidly, businesses are demanding social media professionals to be digital natives, socially sophisticated, creative and capable. A career in social media will be diverse, fast-paced and constantly adapting to new technologies. A talented social media professional is always striving to extend their reach.

Why are careers in digital marketing and social media in demand?

The popular Moz Blog talks about why social media is so important in their “Beginner’s Guide”. "Social media is a way for people to communicate and interact online. While it has been around since the dawn of the World Wide Web, in the last 10 years or so we've seen a surge in both the number and popularity of social media sites. It's called social media because users engage with (and around) it in a social context, which can include conversations, commentary, and other user-generated annotations and engagement interactions.”

Popular forms of social media compete with each other, and the most popular platforms are always changing. You might remember Bebo or MySpace, but they’ve been fossilised in the wake of Facebook (which only opened to the public in 2006.) In anticipation of changing trends, Facebook bought out a lot of their competition, big and small. They successfully acquired Instagram and WhatsApp, but Facebook was rebuffed by the owner of hugely popularSnapChat.

We have a bigger population than ever before, but we are also more interconnected than at any other point in human history. 1/3 of the world’s population are social media users. Signing up to social media is seemingly free, but this is because in order to use the platforms you are constantly being exposed to advertisement. More than that, businesses can create their own pages and profiles, to better connect with their consumer.

There are over 50 million business pages on Facebook. But Facebook is only one example of an avenue for social media marketing, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Snapchat and YouTube are also major players. Social media marketing lets your clients and customers know who you and your business are. 77% of Twitter users said they felt more positive about a business when it responded to their tweet.

Types of social media careers

Download Upskilled’s Social Media Playbook for more detailed information on these 4 career choices in digital marketing.

Career #1: Social Media Manager

For any business, successful use of social media involves knowing how to get content trending, as well as managing and preventing any social media scandals. A brand needs a very clear and consistent image. A social media manager needs to be across all of this, highly organised, funand imaginative.

Career #2: Communications Specialist or Online Community Manager

Both these roles require an expert communicator. The communications specialist has similar responsibilities to the social media manager, but with a stronger focus on client and customer interaction.

On a macro level, the communications specialist gives the business its voice. On a micro level, the online community manager is responding to all the Tweets, comments and DMs (direct messages), across all the platforms, and giving each customer the most articulate and sensitive response possible.

Career #3: Digital Marketing Manager

This role involves developing and implementing new campaigns, both online and IRL (in real life.) A good campaign informs customers about a brand, promotes brand loyalty and boosts sales.

Career #4: Blogger or Influencer

Bloggers and influencers are sometimes self-employed, but in recent years companies have identified a benefit in setting up a blog for its brand. Self-employed bloggers and influencers earn money by doing paid promotions or endorsements for a brand. They only start receiving these kinds of offers once they have a huge following.

Most bloggers or influencers become popular for their beauty or brains. They stand out by having expert knowledge in a certain field. For example, beauty bloggers with outstanding skills in make-up application, or thorough scientific knowledge about skincare, receive free products as well as cash bonuses for promoting a product on their blog.

Professional bloggers analyse metadata, carefully choose keywords and design posts that will appear at the top of the page in search engines. By writing good blog posts, traffic is attracted toward their blog and therefore their company.

Social media courses

Although anyone can create a social media profile or page, there is much more than meets the eye when it comes to making a career out of social media marketing. As a response to the meteoric rise of advertising and communications on social media, many Australian universities are introducing a digital or social media component to their bachelor degree in communications.
