Babylon was a trip of a movie and I was lucky enough to attend the red carpet premiere event pictured. 3 hours of whirlwind 1920s razzledazzle, creative genius, crazy excess and sickening depravity.
Amazing and very disturbing - not for the faint hearted! Margot Robbie was incredible as the unredeemable rags to riches whirling dervish, Nellie Le Roy in contrast to Brad Pitt’s, sophisticated movie star Jack Conrad.
It’s about the fallout of 1920s Hollywood as the industry begins to transition from silent pictures to the world of sound films. The silent formula was super successful and highly profitable - but the stakeholders were so rich and so busy partying, that they never saw change coming.
Sound familiar? And this was 100 years ago! At its essence, this is a story about technical change and transformation and wow - could they have done with some great change leadership!
In the movie, the public tastes sound and they are never going back. Hollywood is dragged kicking and screaming into the new - and most of the industry just isn’t ready. After working plein air, cinematographers are confined to the artificial light and sound of hotbox studios and have no idea how to make it all work. The silent stars are clueless on a sound stage and are quickly overtaken by new stars of stage and screen. Studio notoriety reshuffles and reputations are ruined.
In the 1950s movies had to battle the invasion of televisions suddenly in everybody’s living room, then video killed the radio star. Now we have YouTube, podcasting, movie studios & TV stations as streaming services available on any smart device we own. And we all own them! Through AI & machine learning, these services even know what we like and serve up more to us daily.
Every industry’s change history can be traced, but future change is often tricky to predict and very hard to react to retrospectively. “Change is the law of life and those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.” – John F. Kennedy
