Course Overview

AI is already in the tools you use. This course shows you how to use it well.

Artificial intelligence has moved into everyday office software, and most people have been left to work it out on their own. The AI in the Workplace Short Course introduces AI in plain language and explores how it can support the work you already do, drafting, summarising, brainstorming, planning, organising information and improving workplace communication.

Across 8 modules, you will move from understanding what AI actually is through to applying it in your own role. You will learn what AI can genuinely help with and when to be cautious, how to write prompts that produce usable results, and how to review what comes back for accuracy, tone, relevance, completeness and bias. A full module is devoted to using AI safely and responsibly: privacy, confidentiality, data security, fairness, copyright and where human accountability sits.

You are not expected to arrive with a technical background. No coding or programming experience is required. The focus throughout is on using AI as a workplace support tool while maintaining human judgement, privacy, quality and professionalism.

What you will walk away with

By the end of this short course, you will be able to:

  • Explain what AI is and how it appears in workplace tools and systems
  • Identify practical ways AI can support common office-based tasks
  • Recognise when AI is useful and when to apply caution
  • Write clearer prompts to improve AI-generated outputs
  • Apply prompt patterns to recurring workplace tasks
  • Review AI outputs for accuracy, tone, relevance, completeness and bias
  • Edit and improve AI drafts before they leave your desk
  • Apply safe, ethical and responsible AI practices in the workplace
  • Protect privacy, confidentiality and data security when using AI tools
  • Use AI as a drafting, planning and support tool within everyday workflows
  • Avoid overreliance and keep human oversight in the loop
  • Adapt AI use to different roles, industries and workplace contexts

Who is this AI Short Course for?

This course suits office-based workers who need practical exposure to AI rather than a technical deep dive. That includes people whose workplace has just rolled out AI tools, administrators and coordinators looking to save time on routine writing and planning, team leaders who want their people using AI sensibly, and anyone who has tried an AI tool, been underwhelmed by the results, and suspects the problem was the prompt rather than the technology.

Course Modules

What you will study

Eight focused modules, including a bonus creative module, take you from understanding what AI is to using it confidently in your everyday work.

Get your bearings before you begin. Find out what AI actually is in plain language, how it differs from the automation and standard software you already use, and which widely held myths get in the way of using it well.

Map AI to the work you actually do. Look at where it genuinely helps with drafting, summarising, brainstorming, planning and organising information, and learn to recognise the situations that call for caution instead.

Most disappointing AI output traces back to the prompt. Learn the fundamentals, apply the 4 C's framework, build a set of reusable prompt patterns for recurring workplace tasks, then put them to work in a hands-on practice lab.

AI output is a first draft, not a finished product. Understand why it needs checking, then build a repeatable review habit that catches problems with accuracy, tone, completeness and bias before anything carries your name.

Know what you can and cannot put into an AI tool, and who remains accountable for the result. Covers privacy, confidentiality and data security, bias, fairness, transparency and copyright, and how human oversight and workplace policy fit together.

Move from one-off experiments to a working routine. Identify which tasks are genuinely suited to AI support, integrate it into the workflows you already have, and guard against the overreliance that quietly erodes your own judgement.

Translate everything you have learned to your own context. See how AI use differs across workplace roles and industries, then bring it together in a final workplace application challenge built around your actual job.

For learners who want to push further. Use AI to produce visual and interactive material rather than just text, then apply the review skills from earlier modules to critique and improve what you have made.

How You Learn

Practise on your own work, not someone else's examples

Reading about AI does not make you better at using it. Every module in this course ends with a challenge that asks you to apply what you have just learned to your own role, your own tasks and your own workplace context so the skills transfer straight back to your desk.

A challenge in every module

Seven workplace challenges across the course, from practical task examples through to a final application challenge built around your actual job.
A hands-on Prompt Practice Lab

Write, test and refine prompts against real workplace tasks, then keep the patterns that worked as a reusable set you take away with you.
Structured, unlockable progression

Each lesson must be completed before the next unlocks, so the sequence holds together and nothing important gets skipped on the way through.

AI short course FAQs

It covers AI at work across eight modules: understanding what AI is, what it can help with, prompting, reviewing outputs critically, safe and ethical use, everyday workflows, and adapting AI to your own role and industry. A bonus module goes beyond the prompt into creating infographics and interactive content. The focus is practical, so you learn how to use AI day-to-day rather than the theory behind how it is built.

No. This is a non-accredited short course, so it is not a nationally recognised qualification under the AQF. On completion, you receive a Certificate of Completion issued by Upskilled Pty Ltd that demonstrates the practical AI skills you have built. If you need nationally recognised units or a full qualification, our Certificate IV in Business (BSB40120), Diploma of Business (BSB50120) and Certificate IV in Information Technology (ICT40120) are all accredited options.

The course takes approximately 20 to 30 hours to complete, and you have 6 months of unlimited access. Because it is fully self-paced, you can move as quickly or as gradually as suits you, and nothing is stopping you from finishing early.

No. There are no entry requirements or prerequisites, and you do not need technical or programming experience. Everything is introduced in plain language, starting from what AI actually is before showing you how it applies at work.

The course is deliberately tool-agnostic. Rather than training you on one product that may change or be replaced, it teaches the prompting, reviewing and responsible-use skills that transfer across whichever AI tools your workplace has approved.

It suits office-based roles such as administration and office support, team leaders and supervisors, project and program coordinators, customer service, HR and recruitment, marketing and communications, and executive assistants. A dedicated module covers how AI use differs across roles and industries so you can adapt it to your own context.

Yes. Self-paced does not mean on your own. Trainer and tutor support is available if you need help with the content, and our student support team can help with anything to do with your enrolment or the learning platform.
