This qualification will suit you if you're already in a Team Leader or similar position where you have the responsibility of supervising a team. If you're passionate about leadership and want to excel in management, this course can equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to effectively carry out responsibilities either as a Team Leader or Executive Personal Assistant.

You'll come across topics like demonstrating leadership in the workplace, applying critical thinking to work practices and leading effective workplace relationships - all relevant to understanding the responsibilities that come with being in a leadership position.
Course structure

This qualification is comprised of units that have a core focus in workplace relationships and leading and faciliting a team. The skills you can develop from the course can prepare you to work in a variety of settings where you carry out responsibilities as a supervisor or Team Leader.

This course will have you undertake summative and formative assessments, write reports and/or create a portfolio, and participate in role-playing scenarios. The unit applies to team leaders, supervisors and new or emerging managers where leadership plays a role in developing and maintaining effective workplace relationships. It applies in any industry or community context. At this level work will normally be carried out within routine and non-routine methods and procedures, which require planning, evaluation, leadership and guidance of others.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to facilitate and apply communication strategies in the workplace within any industry. This unit has a specific focus on the communication skills required for supervisor level workers with responsibility for other workers.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to implement operational plans by planning and acquiring resources, monitoring and adjusting operational performance and providing reports on performance, as required. The unit applies to individuals who plan activities to achieve team and organisational objectives. At this level, work will normally be carried out within routine and non-routine methods and involve procedures that require planning, evaluation, leadership and guidance of others.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to implement and monitor an organisation’s work health and safety (WHS) policies, procedures and programs in the relevant work area in order to meet legislative requirements. The unit applies to those with supervisory responsibilities in a work area who have a broad knowledge of WHS policies and contribute well-developed skills in creating solutions to problems through analysis and evaluation of information from a variety of sources. They provide supervision and guidance to others and have limited responsibility for the output of others.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop and use emotional intelligence to increase self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management in the workplace. The unit applies to individuals who are required to identify, analyse, synthesise and act on information from a range of sources and who deal with unpredictable problems as part of their job role. These individuals may be responsible for leading a team or work area.

They may have responsibility for and provide guidance to others.

These individuals are typically responsible for reviewing or developing work processes, products or services that may be proposed or already existing.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to communicate effectively as a workplace leader, including understanding the context, choosing methods of communication to suit the audience, and following up. The unit applies to managers, supervisors and team leaders required to communicate with other persons within the workplace. Communication skills cover a range of methods and contexts within principally structured environments.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to plan and prioritise own work tasks. It also addresses the skills and knowledge to monitor and obtain feedback on personal work performance. The unit applies to individuals who are required to design their own work schedules and work plans and to establish priorities for their work. They will typically hold some responsibilities for the work of others and have some autonomy in relation to their own role.

As a guide, entrants to this program:

  • Must be 18 years of age and have completed Year 10, or
  • have a qualification at Certificate III or higher,
  • or have 2 years of relevant experience, and complete a course/suitability interview.

The participants in the BSB40520 - Certificate IV in Leadership and Management may be employees already working in supervisory or leadership role.

This qualification reflects the role of individuals working as developing and emerging leaders and managers in a range of enterprise and industry contexts.

As well as assuming responsibility for their own performance, individuals at this level provide leadership, guidance and support to others. They also have some responsibility for organising and monitoring the output of their team.

They apply solutions to a defined range of predictable and unpredictable problems, and analyse and evaluate information from a variety of sources.

Participants will be required to complete a Language Literacy and Numeracy skills assessment before enrolment can be confirmed.

Language requirements

This course involves reading, researching and undertaking a range of written and practical assessments, as well as engaging in online forums and discussions. Furthermore, the delivery mode relies on the extensive use of written communication.

As such, entry to the course requires:

the successful completion of English to Year 10 level, or

a qualification at Certificate III level or higher;

OR 2 years relevant industry experience in a role that requires the use of written documentation and communication.

Other requirements

Some assessments have Role-Play components and will require you to participate in role plays with others. These are designed to establish simulation and to demonstrate practical and/or oral communication skills. You will be required to organise these with other people, which can be your family, friends or workplace colleagues.
