Course Overview

Learn how HR works, end-to-end.

HR is not just paperwork and policy. It is about helping a business make good decisions about its people, who to hire, how to develop them, how to keep them safe and fairly treated, and how to sort things out when they go wrong. The HR Essentials Short Course gives you that whole picture in one self-paced online program.

Across 6 modules, you will move through the full employee lifecycle: aligning HR with business strategy, staying on the right side of legal, WHS and ethical requirements, designing fair reward practices, recruiting and onboarding well, running performance conversations that work, and supporting people through grievances, disputes and workplace change. You will also learn to read HR data and turn it into recommendations your leaders can act on.

You are not expected to arrive as an HR expert. The course is built to grow your confidence from the ground up, whether you are stepping into HR for the first time or you are a manager who wants to lead your people better.

What you will walk away with

By the end of this short course, you will be able to:

  • Explain how the HR function supports business strategy and organisational goals
  • Apply legal, ethical and data-driven thinking to everyday HR decisions
  • Identify, review, develop and improve workplace policies and procedures
  • Recognise HR's role in WHS, consultation, sustainability and responsible AI use
  • Design fair reward practices using market benchmarks and performance evidence
  • Plan, advertise for, screen and select candidates through a fair, compliant process
  • Coordinate onboarding that supports early performance and retention
  • Run performance development conversations and document outcomes fairly
  • Interpret the NES, modern awards, enterprise agreements and employment contracts
  • Use HR data and reporting to spot trends, flag risks and recommend improvements

Course Modules

What you will study

Six modules take you from the strategic foundations of HR through to the frameworks that govern the employment relationship. Work through them in order to build a complete picture of how an HR function runs.

Get your bearings before you begin. Meet the simulated business you will work alongside, see how the interactive activities and knowledge checks fit together, and understand what HR really covers beyond paperwork and policy.

Connect HR activity to business strategy, then work within the rules that shape it. Find reliable workforce information, review and write policies and procedures, meet legal and WHS obligations, apply ethical judgement and use AI tools responsibly without giving up human accountability.

Design a remuneration framework that holds up on fairness and market benchmarks. Choose the right workforce data tools, read the metrics to spot trends and risks, plan for succession, then turn your findings into practical recommendations for change.

Run the full hiring cycle from confirming a role is needed to a new starter settling in. Write accurate job descriptions, attract and screen candidates, interview and assess fairly, make and communicate decisions, then handle offers, privacy, records and onboarding.

Move performance beyond the annual appraisal. Set clear, measurable expectations tied to strategy, prepare for and run fair reviews, recognise strong work and address under-performance, handle disagreement about an outcome, and improve the system itself.

Understand the framework behind the employment relationship. Interpret the NES, modern awards, agreements and contracts, know when to seek specialist advice, support people through grievances, disputes and negotiations, and keep records that stand up to scrutiny.

How You Learn

Practise your HR skills inside a simulated business

Rather than reading theory and hoping it sticks, you work through the course alongside a simulated Australian business that is growing fast, opening new sites across two states and hiring at pace. It has its own website, its own policies and its own HR documents, so the tasks you complete are the tasks a real HR team would be handed.

A business with real documents

Policies, procedures, position descriptions and workplace forms are all hosted for you to open, review and work from, exactly as you would on the job.
Realistic workplace scenarios

Follow the HR team through genuine situations: a recruitment campaign, a difficult performance conversation, a workplace dispute, a policy that is no longer fit for purpose.
Interactive from start to finish

Quizzes, drag-and-drop tasks, scenario builders and self-assessment tools are built into the lessons, with instant feedback every time.

It covers the full employee lifecycle across six modules: HR strategy, governance and compliance; reward, workforce data and continuous improvement; recruitment and onboarding; performance development; and employee and industrial relations. The focus is practical, so you learn how each area works day-to-day rather than just the theory behind it.

No. This is a non-accredited short course, so it is not a nationally recognised qualification under the AQF. No. There are no entry requirements or prerequisites, and every topic starts from the foundations before showing you how it applies in a workplace. You do not need a background in strategy, workplace law, WHS, data or AI either.

It is a fictional Australian company built specifically for this course, complete with its own website, policies and HR documents. As the business grows and hires, you work through the same HR decisions its team would face. Learning against a consistent workplace makes the content stick far better than isolated textbook examples.

It supports roles such as HR Assistant, HR Coordinator, HR Administrator, HR Officer, People and Culture Assistant, Recruitment Coordinator and Onboarding Coordinator. It is also a strong upskilling step for team leaders, office managers and small business owners who handle people matters without a dedicated HR function.

Yes. Self-paced does not mean on your own. Trainer and tutor support is available if you need help with the content, and our student support team can help with anything to do with your enrolment or the learning platform.
