Certificate IV vs Diploma vs degree in project management: which is right?
One of the most common questions we get about project management study is whether it is worth completing a Certificate IV first, or whether you can go straight to the Diploma. The honest answer depends less on the qualifications than on where you are right now.
Here is how the three main options compare, and who each one suits.

Who the Certificate IV suits
The Certificate IV in Project Management Practice (BSB40920) is designed for people who keep a project running smoothly rather than carrying the whole thing. It suits:
- People moving into their first project role from an administration or coordination job
- Anyone already doing project work informally who wants it formally recognised
- Career changers looking for a way into project work without a degree
Across nine units you learn to apply scope, time, quality, cost, human resources and communication techniques in a project support role, and you produce the real working documents: plans, schedules, registers and status reports. The qualification is software neutral, so what you learn transfers to whichever platform an employer uses. It prepares you for roles such as project administrator, project coordinator, project officer and project support officer.
Who the Diploma suits
The Diploma of Project Management (BSB50820) is for the person accountable for the project: the scope, the schedule, the budget, the risk register and the team delivering against it. It suits:
- Project coordinators and officers ready to take on accountability for delivery
- Managers who have picked up project responsibility without formal training
- Specialists moving into project delivery from engineering, IT, construction or operations
Across 12 units you learn to manage project scope, time, quality, cost, human resources, communication, risk and integration, alongside leadership units such as communicating with influence and managing team effectiveness. It prepares you for roles such as project manager, operations manager and construction project manager.

Who a degree suits
A bachelor degree suits people who want a broad university education and can commit to several years of study, or who are aiming at employers and graduate programs that ask for a degree. It is usually broader and more theoretical, and it takes considerably longer.
It does not have to be one or the other. Some universities recognise a relevant diploma for credit or entry, although policies vary, so check with the university you are considering.
Do I need the Certificate IV before the Diploma?
No. There are no formal entry requirements for the Diploma, so you can enrol in it directly. The Certificate IV is the better starting point if you have never worked on a project, while the Diploma assumes you are comfortable in a workplace and ready to take responsibility for delivery.
Starting at Certificate IV is not a detour, either. The Diploma is a natural next step once you finish, so you can build up in stages.
Is either one a project management certification?
No, and the difference matters. Both are nationally recognised qualifications on the Australian Qualifications Framework, assessed against a national standard. Industry certifications are separate. They are usually shorter, sit outside the AQF and test one particular framework or method.
The two complement each other. A qualification gives you the underlying discipline, and a certification signals fluency in whichever method an employer runs.
Diploma of Project Management or Diploma of Leadership and Management?
This is the other comparison people weigh up. Project management is about delivering a defined piece of work with a start and a finish: scope, schedule, budget and risk. The Diploma of Leadership and Management is designed for people who already supervise others or work in middle management and want to plan and manage operations, lead people through change and keep teams performing.
If your work comes in projects, project management is usually the better fit. If your work is leading a team through the everyday, leadership and management usually is. Where units overlap between the two, Credit Transfer may reduce your study load if you later take the other diploma, so ask about it before you enrol.
Frequently asked questions
Can I study the Diploma while working full time?
Yes. It is 100% online and self-paced, with no scheduled classes you have to attend, so you can fit it around full-time work. Online tutorials and Ask Me Anything sessions are there when you want extra support.
Are there exams or role plays?
There are no exams. Assessments include reports, projects, written and oral questions, and some role-play scenarios.
Do I need Year 12 or strong Microsoft skills?
There are no formal entry requirements for either qualification. The Diploma recommends Year 12 level literacy and numeracy, the Certificate IV recommends Year 10 level, and both recommend basic computer skills.
