Certificate IV in Marketing and Communication explained (units, length, cost, online study)
The Certificate IV in Marketing and Communication is twelve units, it takes most people 12 to 18 months, it is entirely online with no exams, and there are no entry requirements. That is the short version.
The longer version is worth having, because this qualification is frequently confused with the specialist social media diploma, and the two suit genuinely different people.
The twelve units, grouped by what they let you do
| What it covers | The units |
|---|---|
| Understanding the market | Assess marketing opportunities, analyse consumer behaviour, develop and apply knowledge of the communications industry |
| Doing the marketing | Undertake marketing activities, promote products and services, market new business ventures |
| The social media unit | Develop a social media strategy, which is the one specialist unit in an otherwise generalist qualification |
| Communicating it | Write complex documents, make presentations, articulate, present and debate ideas |
| Operating in a business | Build and maintain business relationships, apply business risk management processes |
Three of the twelve units are about presenting and arguing a case rather than about marketing technique. That is deliberate and it is the most useful thing in the qualification. Most junior marketing work fails not because the idea was wrong but because nobody could get it approved.
How long it takes, honestly
Most students finish in 12 to 18 months. It is self-paced, so that range is genuinely in your hands, and the people who land at the front of it are the ones who book study time rather than hoping to find it.
A workable rhythm around a full-time job is two weeknights and one block at the weekend. Your trainer sets a training plan with you at the start, which exists to make the milestones visible in the months when work gets loud. If you fall behind, tell your trainer rather than going quiet, because the plan can be reset around what is actually happening.
What online study involves here
- 100% online and self-paced. No scheduled classes, no campus, no exams anywhere in the qualification.
- Practical assessment. Summative and formative tasks, reports or a portfolio, role-play scenarios, and projects that require your own research.
- A simulated workplace. Tasks and assessments run in an environment built for it through MyUpskilled, which matters if your current job gives you no marketing work to practise on.
- Internship opportunities. Available once you are 80 per cent through.
- What you need. English reading and writing plus numeracy at around Year 10 level, a modern computer with high-speed internet, and a device that can record and play back audio and video.
There are no formal entry requirements. A consultant checks the level suits you and you complete a short language, literacy and numeracy assessment at enrolment.
What it costs, and the only sensible way to find out
We do not publish fees, because they move and a number in a blog post is wrong within a month. Payment plans are available, and an education consultant can give you the current figure and check whether any funding applies in your state.
Ask about Recognition of Prior Learning at the same time. People who have been doing marketing tasks without a qualification behind them often have evidence that reduces the study load, and that reduces the figure more reliably than any promotion.
This or the social media diploma?
The question we get most on this course, and the answer is about breadth against depth rather than about level.
The Certificate IV in Marketing and Communication is the generalist option. You come out able to assess an opportunity, understand a customer, run an activity, write it up and present it, across any channel, and you get one unit on developing a social media strategy along the way. It suits people who want a marketing job rather than a social media job, and people who do not yet know which part of marketing they will end up in.
The Diploma of Social Media Marketing with AI is the specialist option, at a higher level, built around organic social, paid social, content and conversion with AI running through it. It suits people who already know that social is the job they want.
If you are torn, look at the ads you would actually apply for. If most of them say marketing coordinator or marketing assistant, the Certificate IV is aimed at you. If they say social media coordinator, the diploma is.
Where it leads
Marketing assistant and marketing coordinator roles are the usual first destinations, and we have published sourced and dated pay ranges for them in the marketing coordinator salary guide. For a picture of the day-to-day work on the social side, what a social media marketer does covers it.
The BSB40820 Certificate IV in Marketing and Communication is nationally recognised, 100% online and self-paced. Upskilled is a Registered Training Organisation, RTO No. 40374, and you can compare the level on the Certificate IV in Business courses page.
