Diploma of Leadership and Management online: units, length, cost and how it works
Yes, the whole thing runs online. No campus, no set class times, no exams anywhere in it, and you work at your own pace with a training plan your trainer sets with you.
That is the short answer to the question most people are typing. The longer answer worth having is whether this is the right qualification for where you are standing, because the diploma of leadership and management online is not an introduction to management. It is built for people who are already supervising someone.
What is actually in it
Twelve units, and they split cleanly into three jobs a manager has to do.
| What it covers | The units |
|---|---|
| Leading people | Demonstrate leadership in the workplace, manage people performance, lead and manage effective workplace relationships, manage team effectiveness |
| Running the operation | Manage business operational plans, manage business risk, support the learning and development of teams and individuals |
| Managing yourself | Lead communication in the workplace, communicate with influence, manage personal and professional development, develop and use emotional intelligence, develop critical thinking in others |
That third group is the one people skim past and then find most useful. Four of the twelve units are about how you operate rather than what you do, which is an honest reflection of why most new managers struggle. The technical side of the job is rarely what defeats people.
Are you at the right level for it?
This is the question worth getting right before you enrol, because the two qualifications are built for different moments in a career and neither is the junior version of the other.
The Certificate IV in Leadership and Management suits you if you have just taken on a team, or you are about to, and you want the method behind the job: how to run a meeting that decides something, how to have the conversation you have been avoiding, how to delegate without hovering. The Diploma assumes you are already doing that and asks a bigger question: can you plan operations, carry risk, and develop the people under you into people who can think for themselves.
A useful test is who you are accountable for. If it is the work, start at Certificate IV. If it is the team's results and a budget, the Diploma is the level that matches. There are no formal entry requirements for either, so this is a judgement about fit rather than eligibility, and an education consultant will talk it through with you before you commit.
How long it takes, and what a week really looks like
Plan on 12 to 24 months for the Diploma. Self-paced means that range is genuinely in your hands, and motivated students who already have the workplace material to draw on finish towards the front of it.
The weekly rhythm matters more than the total. Two weeknights and a block at the weekend carries most people through comfortably. What does not work is waiting for a clear week to appear, because in a management job it never does. Your trainer sets a training plan at the start precisely so the milestones are visible when the month gets away from you, and if life knocks you off course the sensible move is to tell them rather than go quiet.
One advantage this qualification has over most: the assessments are work-based. Written tasks, reports or a portfolio, role-play scenarios, and projects that use your own research. If you are already managing a team, the material you need is sitting on your desk, and the study makes you better at the job while you do it.
What online study involves here
- Self-paced and fully online. Materials in MyUpskilled, available whenever you are, with no scheduled attendance.
- No exams. Assessment is practical and marked by a qualified assessor.
- A simulated workplace. You run tasks in an environment built for it, which matters if your current job does not give you scope to practise everything the units ask for.
- What you need. Solid English reading and writing plus basic numeracy, a modern computer with high-speed internet, and a device that can record and play back audio and video. The course page quotes two different reading levels, so ask your consultant which applies.
- Internship opportunities. Available once you are 80% through the course.
The money question, answered the only way we can
We do not print fees, because they change and a number in a blog post is wrong within a month. What we can tell you is that payment plans are available and an education consultant can give you the current pricing and check what applies in your state. If you would rather read first, the ways to pay page sets out the options.
Worth raising at the same time: Recognition of Prior Learning and Credit Transfer. People who have been managing for years frequently have evidence that reduces the study load, and the time to find that out is before you enrol.
