If you have some IT basics and want to go further, the Certificate IV in Information Technology is usually the next qualification you look at. It is also where people start asking harder questions. Is it too technical for me? Should I pick a specialisation? Would a Diploma be better?

What is the Certificate IV in Information Technology?
The Certificate IV in Information Technology (ICT40120) is a nationally recognised qualification that builds practical skills across IT support, cyber security, cloud computing, programming, databases and web development.
The general version is deliberately broad. It gives you a working introduction to each of those areas, so you can find the part of IT that suits you before you commit to it.
How technical is it compared with a Certificate III?
Noticeably more technical. A Certificate III covers the foundations. At Certificate IV level you start doing more of the technical work yourself: writing SQL queries, applying programming fundamentals in Python, configuring cloud services, installing virtual machines and troubleshooting applications.
If that sounds daunting, you are not alone, because confidence is one of the most common worries we hear. There are no formal entry requirements. The course recommends Year 10 level literacy and numeracy and basic computer skills, trainers are there when you get stuck, and the IT faculty runs Ask Me Anything sessions on Zoom.
What will I learn?
The course has 20 units, grouped into seven areas:

Along the way you work with tools including Python, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, SQL, AWS and Hyper-V, and your enrolment includes LinkedIn Learning if you want to go deeper on any of them.
Are there exams?
No. Assessment is task based. You answer research-based questions, work through scenario-based projects, and build a portfolio of work you can show employers. Practical tasks are completed in a simulated IT workplace on the MyUpskilled platform.
Do I have to choose a specialisation?
No. The general Certificate IV is designed for people who want to try each area first. If you already know where you are heading, there are versions with a specialist focus, such as Cyber Security, Cyber Security and AI, Networking, Programming, Systems Administration Support and Web Development.

Is a Certificate IV worth doing after a Certificate III?
If you want to move beyond entry-level support, usually yes. The Certificate III gives you the foundations. The Certificate IV adds technical depth and shows you what each specialisation actually involves, which makes your next decision a much better informed one.

Should I choose a Certificate IV or a Diploma?
This is the hesitation we hear most, and the honest answer depends on your starting point.
- Choose the Certificate IV if you are building technical confidence, changing careers into IT, or not yet sure which area you want to specialise in.
- Consider the Diploma if you already work in IT or have a clear direction. The Diploma of Information Technology (ICT50220) goes further and prepares you for both technical and supervisory roles. As a general guide it takes 12 to 24 months.
There are no formal entry requirements for the Diploma either, so you are not forced to study both. But if the Diploma feels like a stretch right now, starting at Certificate IV and moving up later is a sensible route, not a wasted step.
How long does it take, and can I study around work?
Most students complete it in 12 to 18 months. It is 100% online and self-paced, so you study around your job rather than a timetable, and a training plan keeps you on track. Motivated students can finish faster, and Recognition of Prior Learning or Credit Transfer can reduce your study load if you already have relevant study or experience.
What jobs can it lead to?
The qualification prepares you for roles such as computer technician, IT support specialist, help desk officer and network administrator. With experience, the skills can lead towards roles such as:
