Certificate III in Business explained: units, length, cost and online study (BSB30120)

The Certificate III in Business is the qualification people do when they want an office job and keep being told they need experience to get one.

It is deliberately unglamorous, and that is its strength. Most entry-level business roles come down to three things: can you use the tools, can you explain yourself, and can people rely on what you hand them. This qualification covers all three and gives you something nationally recognised that says so.

Here is what is actually in it.

So what is a Certificate III in Business?

It is a nationally recognised qualification at Certificate III level on the Australian Qualifications Framework, coded BSB30120. It is the first full business qualification in the national training package, it assumes no prior office work, and it is the level most employers mean when a job ad says a business qualification is desirable.

The 13 units

The BSB30120 Certificate III in Business is made up of 13 units: 6 core units set by the national training package, plus 7 electives. The electives Upskilled delivers are weighted towards business software and digital work, so they are grouped below by what they let you do rather than by code.

What it coversThe units
Everyday business softwareUse business software applications, design and produce business documents, design and produce spreadsheets
Working digitally with other peopleUse digital technologies to communicate in a work environment, use digital technologies to collaborate in a work environment
The money and risk sideProcess financial transactions, identify business risk
Communication and teamworkEngage in workplace communication, use inclusive work practices, apply critical thinking skills in a team environment
Looking after yourself and the workplaceAssist with maintaining workplace safety, support personal wellbeing in the workplace, participate in sustainable work practices

Three of the seven electives are digital, which is the difference between this version and an older business qualification. Very little office work happens on paper now, and the unit list reflects that.

How long it takes

Most students finish the Certificate III in 12 to 18 months while working or managing a household, and motivated learners finish sooner. It is self-paced, so the honest version is that it takes as long as your week allows. Your trainer sets a training plan with you at the start, which is what keeps that from drifting.

What it costs and how payment works

Prices change, and anything printed in a blog post is out of date within a month, so we do not quote fees here. What we can tell you is how it works: payment plans are available, and an education consultant can give you current pricing and check whether any funding applies in your state.

If you want the detail before you speak to anyone, the ways to pay page sets out the options, and the government funding page explains where subsidies exist and where they do not.

What online study actually looks like here

The most common question on this course is whether there are classes to attend. There are not.

  • 100% online and self-paced. No set class times, no campus, no exams anywhere in the qualification.
  • Assessment is practical. Reports, a portfolio, role-play scenarios, projects that need your own research, and written or spoken questions that apply the theory.
  • A simulated workplace. You work through tasks in a simulated office environment inside MyUpskilled, which is where the job-ready part comes from.
  • Support beyond your trainer. Trainers are industry experienced, and there is an Australian-based student support team behind them.
  • Internship opportunities. Available to students who want work experience alongside the qualification.

What you need: English and numeracy at about Year 10 level, a modern computer with high-speed internet, a device that can record and play back audio and video, and enough computing confidence to make and upload a short video. There are no formal entry requirements and no office experience is required.

General, or the Administration version?

There are two versions of this qualification, and the choice is about the electives rather than the level.

The general Certificate III in Business is the one described above, weighted towards business software and digital work. If you specifically want to work in an office doing administration, reception, diaries and accounts, the Certificate III in Business (Administration) uses a different elective set built for exactly that.

Both are nationally recognised and both sit at the same level. If you are not sure which, pick based on the job ads you are actually answering.

Will this level of qualification get me hired?

It is a fair question and it deserves a straight answer rather than a sales pitch. A Certificate III will not jump you past someone with five years of experience. What it does is take you out of the pile of applicants with nothing formal at all, and it gives you something concrete to talk about in an interview: the spreadsheet you built, the document you produced, the risk you identified.

Graduates commonly move into business support, sales support, administrative assistant, accounts assistant, data entry and customer service roles, across construction, professional services, education, logistics and government. The next step from there is the Certificate IV in Business, which is where supervision and more specialised work start.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need office experience to enrol?

No. This qualification is built for people who do not have it yet.

Are there live classes?

No. Everything is self-paced and online, and you are never required to be somewhere at a set time.

How much study a week should I plan for?

Enough to keep momentum rather than a fixed number. Two weeknights and a weekend block suits most people studying around work.

Can I get credit for work I have already done?

Possibly. Recognition of Prior Learning and Credit Transfer both apply with supporting evidence, and either can reduce your study load. Raise it with your education consultant before you enrol.

What if I want to work specifically in administration?

Take the Administration version, and read how to become an administration assistant for the route into that job.
