Social media marketing salary in Australia: what you can earn

Search social media marketing salary Australia and you get a single number with no context attached to it. The useful fact is the spread: roughly thirty thousand dollars between the bottom and the top of this field, and almost nobody explains what sits in the middle of it.

It is not years. Plenty of people spend four years as a coordinator. The thing that moves you up is whether you own a result or run a channel, and that distinction shows up clearly in what employers advertise.

What the job ads actually say

These are average annual salary ranges from SEEK Career Advice, all refreshed by SEEK on 1 October 2026 and read on 12 October 2026. They come from advertised roles, so they tell you what employers offer rather than what people end up on.

RoleTypical advertised rangeWhat the title usually means
Social media coordinator$70,000 to $80,000 a yearYou run the channels. Calendar, posting, community, reporting on what happened
Marketing coordinator$75,000 to $85,000 a yearThe same job with a wider brief, covering email, events and campaign support as well as social
Social media manager$85,000 to $100,000 a yearYou own the strategy and usually a budget. SEEK puts the typical salary at $93,000 a year, with 2,142 roles advertised in Australia
Digital marketing specialist$85,000 to $100,000 a yearPaid performance across channels, where the number you are judged on is cost per result
Content marketing manager$90,000 to $95,000 a yearYou own what gets made and why, across more than social

For reference, SEEK also shows around 1,994 social media coordinator roles advertised in Australia, which tells you the entry level of this field is a real market rather than a handful of jobs in two cities.

The jump is not about years, it is about accountability

Look at the gap between coordinator and manager. Roughly fifteen to twenty thousand dollars, and the difference in the job description is almost always the same thing: the manager is accountable for an outcome, and the coordinator is accountable for activity.

A coordinator is measured on whether the content went out, whether the comments were answered, whether the report was delivered. A manager is measured on whether the thing worked. That is an uncomfortable trade, because activity is easy to prove and outcomes are not, but it is where the money is.

Which means the practical way to raise your pay is not to wait for seniority. It is to attach yourself to a number, then be able to show what you did to it. A campaign that lifted enquiries, a channel that grew, a cost per lead that came down. One documented result is worth more in a salary conversation than two more years of posting.

What the national picture adds

Jobs and Skills Australia groups social media work inside Advertising and Marketing Professionals, ANZSCO 2251. Checked on 12 October 2026, that group has around 103,100 people employed, median weekly earnings of $1,957 a year-round full-time equivalent, a part-time share of 18%, a median age of 36 and annual employment growth of about 3,000.

Treat that group as the shape of the field rather than as a social media salary, because it also contains advertising managers and degree-qualified marketing professionals in senior roles. The useful signals are the direction and the size: it is growing, it is large, and it is not an unusually casualised field.

Three things that move the number more than people expect

  • In-house or agency. Agencies often pay less at the junior end and teach you faster, because you work across several clients at once. In-house pays a little better and goes deeper on one brand.
  • Whether you touch paid. Managing an advertising budget puts you in a different conversation. It is the clearest line between content work and marketing work, and it is reflected in the digital marketing specialist range above.
  • What you can prove. Not what you have done, what you can show. Screenshots of growth, a before and after on cost per result, a campaign you can talk through end to end.

Is this a serious career, or a young person's job?

It is a fair question, because the field has an image problem, and the answer is in the numbers above rather than in anybody's opinion.

A median age of 36 is not a youth industry. Six-figure ranges at manager level are not pocket money. More than 100,000 people are employed in the wider group and it is adding roughly 3,000 a year. Meanwhile the parts of the work that are hardest to replace, deciding what is worth saying, reading an audience, holding a line with an angry customer in public, are the parts that improve with age and experience rather than decaying.

What has genuinely changed is the production work. AI tools now draft, cut, caption and resize far faster than a person can, so the people under pressure are the ones whose entire value was producing assets. The people who decide what gets made, and whether it worked, are doing better than ever.

Where the qualification fits

None of the above requires a degree. What it requires is evidence that you can run a channel and explain the result, which is what a qualification built around real campaign work gives you alongside the credential.

The 11426NAT Diploma of Social Media Marketing with AI is eight units covering strategy, marketing communication plans, project work and four AI-specific units across content, organic social, paid advertising and conversion. Paid advertising and conversion optimisation are in there deliberately, because those are the two units that put you on the right side of the coordinator to manager line. It is online, self-paced, with no exams, and the Diploma takes most students 12 to 24 months. Payment plans are available and an education consultant can give you current pricing.
