Thinking of a career in hospitality? According to the recent Restaurant and Catering Australia Treasury Report, you should be. “As Australia moves towards a service-based economy as a result of globalisation and growth in Asian source markets, the importance of the tourism and hospitality industry will become even more prevalent.”
Employment growth in the hospitality industry is expected to be higher than any other sector; which is great news for people looking to find work in this secure industry. Right now, the hospitality sector is growing at a rate of 16.9% or 93 600 jobs.
The Australian Government has also adopted an ambitious target of doubling overnight visitor expenditure to $140 billion by 2020; achieving growth targets and improving productivity and employment opportunities is a big focus of the Australian economy.
Upskilling young Australians with qualifications in hospitality through Bright Employment
Cleo Knight is the Marketing and Communications Manager at Bright Employment. She has worked alongside game-changers in this organisation, helping young Australians to get better work skills and launch their careers in the hospitality sector. Here, Cleo talks about Bright Employment’s work with the Giants AFL team through the grounds cafe, and how these exciting opportunities for students first came up.
Getting hospitality skills while working in a real hospitality setting
Cleo: I’d like to explain more about our training program that runs with the Giants where we partner with Upskilled. This results in students gaining an accredited qualification, the Certificate II in Hospitality. The Giants is an AFL club (Sydney’s newest in fact) and they also have the only women’s AFL club in Sydney. They have hired and recruited some of the best players in the industry, as well as the very best staff.
They are a very high performing club with state-of-the-art facilities, out at Sydney Olympic Park. The Giants does a huge amount of work in the community sector and the community space. They have an initiative called Giants Care.
The Giants Care program
Giants Care is engaged with local government and key Western Sydney stakeholders to unearth the biggest issues facing youth, families and the broader community in this region. Four priority areas were identified for the program planning. They aim to deliver on the four key pillars of the Club’s community agenda which are:
Giants Care partners with some really prominent corporate partners – doing a lot of work in the community sector. Bright Employment ended up taking over their café lease when it was up for renewal and that’s one of the ways that the partnership with Bright Employment and the Giants fell into place.
